Top 33 Song Lyrics That Will Make You Think

Do you listen to the words or the melody of a song? I have to admit; I love lyrics, especially song lyrics that make you think and might have a double meaning. Two people can listen to the same song and have different takeaways.

A good beat or melody is great, but lyrics tell a story and for me, that is the most important part of a song. In this post, I will outline some thought-provoking lyrics.

Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.

– E. Y. Harburg

Heartbreak is #1

Heartbreak has given us so many great songs. Think about Taylor Swift, Adele, Sam Smith, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez and the great songs they released after a breakup.

The research paper  “What has America been singing about?¹” lists heartbreak as the number one song topic at 67.3% for all songs written from 1960 to 2010.

Rounding out the top ten from that list: Sex at 29.9, Music & Musicians at 16.3, Dancing at 15.1, Personal Identity at 9.5, Wealth at 9.3, Partying at 9.2, Alcohol & Drugs at 9.0, Family at 8.0 and Depression at 7.4.

Every bad situation is a blues song waiting to happen.

– Amy Winehouse
