Why is Superman So Famous?

Why is Superman So Famous?

Are you a fan of Superman? You know, faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings, etc.

I have to admit that until recently I wasn’t a fan, maybe because I thought hiding behind a pair of glasses was silly. How could Lois Lane, the greatest reporter in the world, not see past the glasses? Batman and Spiderman at least had disguises.

The History of Superman

Writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster created Superman in 1938 as part of DC comics. He has appeared in comics, movies and television series. Superman appeared first in a series of animated clips before two serial movies in 1948 and 1950. The first feature film debuted in 1951, titled Superman and the Mole Men.

Superman tells the story of a baby from the planet of Krypton sent to earth with miraculous ability who grows up to be the Man of Steel, helping people and averting disasters that could end the world.

Superman’s Powers

What makes superman so special? According to Book Riot, superman’s powers are:

  • Freeze Breath
  • Heat Vision
  • Invulnerability
  • Microscopic Vision
  • Power of Flight
  • Super Hearing
  • Super Intelligence
  • Super Speed
  • Super Strength
  • Telescopic Vision
  • Time Travel
  • Ventriloquist
  • X-Ray Vision

Although Superman has all these powers, it might be his compassion towards humanity that is his greatest superpower. His ability to always do the right thing, even when it’s harder. His ability to be a symbol of hope in dark times.

Superman’s only known weakness is green kryptonite, which nullifies his powers and red kryptonite, which changes his personality.

Final Thoughts

As a writer, I can now appreciate the epic mythology and world building of Superman. He is himself as Superman, while Clark Kent is the secret identity he hides behind. Have I left any great Superman television shows or movies from this list? Let me know in the comments.

Until next time
