The Top 35 Christmas Movies

The Top 35 Christmas Movies

Do you like Christmas movies? There used to be so few of them when I was young, or maybe it felt that way because we only had three channels and one of them was in French. Now there seem to be millions of Christmas movies out there between the Hallmark Channel and Netflix alone.

I’ve broken down my favorite Christmas movies by category, although some movies could fit in multiple categories

Christmas Movies

Classic Cartoons

They broadcast these classic early animations every year:

  • Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
  • Frosty the Snowman
  • A Charlie Brown Christmas
  • The Year Without Santa Claus
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The Heat Miser from The Year Without Santa Claus was an interesting character.  Did you know Boris Karloff was the voice of the original Grinch?

Classic Movies

Old movies from the 1950s or earlier that are still enjoyable to watch:

  • A Christmas Carol
  • Miracle on 34th Street
  • Holiday Inn
  • White Christmas
  • It’s a Wonderful Life

It wouldn’t be Christmas Eve if ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ wasn’t on TV. According to the Washington Post, the song ‘White Christmas’ is still one of the most popular Christmas Songs.

Family Drama

Christmas mixed with family drama and a happy ending (most times).

  • The Family Stone
  • While You Were Sleeping
  • Home for the Holidays
  • Four Christmases
  • Love the Coopers

Diane Keaton played the mother in both Love the Coopers and The Family Stone.

Love Stories

Romance and Christmas movies go hand in hand. These movies always leave you feeling warm and fuzzy after watching, although the Last Christmas has a twist you might not see coming:

  • Last Christmas
  • Last Holiday
  • Love Actually
  • The Holiday
  • A Christmas Prince

Andrew Ridgeley from the group ‘Wham’ who originally recorded Last Christmas filmed a cameo in the crowd during the Christmas show in the movie The Last Christmas.

Christmas Comedies

When you need a laugh to break up the real family drama, turn to these movies:

  • Elf
  • Home Alone
  • National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
  • Bad Santa
  • Just Friends

Did you know that John Candy who played Gus Polinski improvised all his lines in Home Alone?

Kids Movies

There are so many great Christmas movies for kids:

  • The Santa Clause
  • Polar Express
  • Jack Frost
  • Prancer
  • Nightmare before Christmas

They filmed The Santa Clause during a hot Toronto summer.

Movies Featuring Christmas

There have long been arguments if the following movies count as Christmas movies:

  • Die Hard
  • Gremlins
  • Lethal Weapon
  • Trading Places
  • Batman Returns

Did you know that they made special shoes to look like feet for Bruce Willis to run through the broken glass in Die Hard?

Final Thoughts

I’m sure I could write this list again and pick an entirely different set of movies there are so many great ones to pick from. What are your favourite Christmas movies? Let me know in the comments.

Until next time
