Top 30 Christmas Songs

Top 30 Christmas Songs

Do you play Christmas songs before or after the first of December? There are so many wonderful Christmas songs, it’s hard to pick the best ones. I must admit I don’t start listening to Christmas songs until a week before the event.

I’ve broken down my favourite Christmas songs by category, although some songs could fit in multiple categories.

Christmas Songs

Classic Christmas Songs

These classic songs will never get old:

  • Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
  • Baby, It’s Cold Outside
  • I’ll Be Home for Christmas
  • Jingle Bell Rock
  • Blue Christmas

According to Wikipedia, ‘Rocking Around the Christmas Tree’ by Brenda Lee recorded in 1958 has over 1 million digital downloads.

Childrens Christmas Songs

Nearly every kid knows the lyrics to these songs:

  • Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
  • The Chipmunk Song
  • Frosty the Snowman
  • Jingle Bells
  • Santa Claus is Coming to Town

According to Song Facts, the ‘Chipmunk Song’ sold over 2.5 million copies three weeks after its release in 1958. It stayed at #1 for four consecutive weeks and was the last Christmas song to do that.

Novelty Songs

These novelty songs have lasted a long time:

  • All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth
  • I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas
  • Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer
  • Please Come Home for Christmas
  • I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

Gail Peevey sang ‘I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas’ on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1953 when she was ten years old. It inspired people to donate to a fund to buy her a hippo. Matilda, a Nile hippo, was donated to the Oklahoma City Zoo on Gail’s behalf. Matilda lived to be almost 50.

Christmas Carols

When I was little on Christmas Eve, my father would take out his guitar and we would sing Christmas songs:

  • Hark! the Herald Angels Sing
  • Children, Go Where I Send Thee
  • Silent Night
  • O Come, All Ye Faithful
  • Away in a Manger

‘Silent Night’ one of the most popular Christmas carols ever has been translated into 300 languages.

Christmas Songs I Hate

Hate might be too strong of a word, but I change the song when these come on:

  • Little Drummer Boy
  • The First Noel
  • You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch
  • Silver Bells
  • The Twelve Days of Christmas

Did you know Thurl Ravenscroft who recorded  ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch’ was also the voice of Kellogg’s Tony the Tiger?

Favorite Songs

I love these songs and never tire of listening to them:

  • Santa Baby
  • Last Christmas
  • All I Want for Christmas Is You
  • O Holy Night
  • Please Come Home for Christmas

Newsweek lists Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ as having sold 6 million copies.  It is the 12th best selling single of all time.

Final Thoughts

I’m sure I could write this list again and pick all new songs. What are your favourite Christmas songs? Let me know in the comments.

Until next time
