The Saute-Moutons company has been safely traversing the rapids for over 30 years. You’ll find them at the Old Port of Montreal near the clock tower. French Fur Traders used the Old Port as early as the 1600s. Besides jet boat rides, the company also offers spin boat rides and panoramic boat cruises.

Safety First

You need to arrive 45 minutes prior to your excursion for a safety briefing and time to get changed. Make sure you have a towel and bathing suit with you. The company provides life jackets and makes sure they fit properly. They provide a locker for your valuables.

It may be necessary to wear a wet suit with a hood and boots depending on the time of year you go, but nothing will keep you dry. On warmer days, ponchos are also available. You cannot take any electronic equipment aboard the boat except sunglasses, hats, and waterproof cameras, which can be secured like a Go-Pro. While you can bring hats and sunglasses on the boat to the rapids, during the ride they need to be secured inside a bag provided by the company.

The Jet Boat

The boat can accommodate over forty people. It has a railing that you can wrap your arms and feet around so all you have to do is hold on. They have certified the boats to meet Canadian standards. They can travel quickly over the rapids without risking overturning because of their shallow design.

Jet Boating Over the Rapids

The ride takes approximately an hour. There is a 15-minute drive to reach the rapids boating under the Champlain Bridge, but once there you will have a blast. The driver tries to find the biggest waves so expect to get slapped in the face with water.  You feel like you are flying over the waves as the boat tosses up and down.

Downtown Montreal

The old port is found on the waterfront in the heart of Old Montreal, where the past meets the present. Founded in the early 1600s, the neighborhood is steeped in history. It is so packed with activities and attractions that it warrants a blog post on its own, but here is a list of some of the highlights:

  • Bonsecours Market
  • Centre d’Histoire de Montreal
  • Chateau Ramezay
  • Montreal City Hall
  • Notre-Dame Basilica
  • Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel
  • Place d’Armes
  • Place Jaques-Cartier
  • Rue Saint-Paul
  • Royal Bank Tower

My Jet Boat Ride

On the day my daughter and I went over the rapids, it was hot and humid, so the water felt nice. Each time through the rapids was exhilarating, and when it ended I was sad. I’ve done white water rafting before, but I found this much more fun and much less tiring than paddling.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a safe fun adventure in Montreal give jet boating a try. Have you ever traversed over rapids? Let me know in the comments.

Until next time
